Context
National policies aimed to counter the Covid-19 pandemic have drastically altered patterns of energy demand around the world and associated impacts on GHG emissions. Analysing the impact of the Covid 19 outbreak on the total energy system and GHG emissions can provide significant information that can help determine how policy makers could tackle climate change in the future and how to spend the recovery packages budget.
Focus
This webinar will focus on the data sources climate modelling teams worldwide use to measure GHG emission dynamics resulting from government policies during the Covid-19 pandemic. It will compare near-real time data approaches (e.g., CO2 concentration observation and satellite measurement data) with alternative approaches (e.g., global mobility data from Google and Apple and the use of new indexes combining various data sources). As the Covid-19 pandemic is a relatively new phenomenon, many of these data approaches are new and experimental, and the reliability and consistency of the data is not yet fully known. The webinar will therefore seek to discuss the various advantages (e.g., level of national granularity, potential to conduct near-real-time analysis and cross-country analyses) and limitations (e.g., level of opacity, associated uncertainties) of these different approaches, and the modelling adjustment the new data requires.
The webinar will also seek to understand how these approaches and their associated outcomes can be integrated into established energy-economy models and macro-economic datasets (e.g., JRC-GEM-E3 model) to support the development of new transition pathways. It will, for example, discuss how the integration of certain socio-economic trends (e.g., behaviour change, technological adoption and policy action) brought in by the Covid-19 pandemic can help define new post-Covid scenarios.
Key questions to discuss include:
■ What are the advantages and disadvantages of various data sources and associated modelling approaches to measure impacts from the Covid-19 crisis on GHG emissions?
■ How can these novel approaches and their respective outcomes be integrated into established models and datasets to project future global GHG emissions?
■ Post-Covid ‘new normal’ scenarios. What choices have modellers made when projecting emissions out to 2030, 2050 and beyond?
