AGU FALL MEETING 2026 – Session GC089 “Multi-sector Dynamics: Energy-Water-Land Systems and the Role of Digital Technology, Computing, and AI Data Centres”
We invite abstract submissions to Session GC089, now in its 8th year as a flagship session of the MultiSector Dynamics community at AGU. This year’s focus is on how rapidly scaling digital technologies such as AI systems, data centers, and computing infrastructure, are reshaping energy-water-land systems and the broader socioeconomic landscapes they are embedded in.
Submission Deadline: August 06, 2026
As AI infrastructure expands at an unprecedented pace, it is driving new demands for electricity, cooling water, land, critical minerals, and chips, while simultaneously transforming labor markets, investment flows, and urban systems. This session seeks contributions that advance integrated, forward-looking frameworks capable of capturing cross-sector feedbacks, teleconnections, and deep uncertainties across these domains.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
• Drivers of digital growth and technological transformation
• High-fidelity cross-sector computing and digital infrastructure science (hardware, workloads, sectoral footprints, siting, metrics)
• AI’s resource footprint, critical materials, urban heat island effects, and life-cycle EWL impacts
• Economic, labor, material, and market impacts of emerging technologies
• Broader energy-water-land dynamics and non-technological drivers
• Technology learning, decarbonization, and policy at the intersection of multisector dynamics
Submissions on broader EWL system dynamics and non-technological drivers of change are equally welcome.
