The North Sea stands at the centre of Europe’s energy transition. Its waters host one of the fastest offshore wind buildouts in the world, its Nordic hydropower offers balancing flexibility that few other regions can match, and its grid ties the energy systems of several countries together. Yet the same region still carries much of Europe’s oil and gas. Turning this fossil heartland into the engine of a clean, secure and affordable European energy system is one of the defining challenges of the coming decade. That challenge raises hard, shared questions. How much offshore wind should be built, and where? How should offshore grids and cross-border markets be designed? What role will storage, hydrogen and Nordic hydropower play in balancing a renewable system? Answering them calls for shared knowledge, strong planning tools, and close cooperation across research, industry and policy. This online workshop aims to present the latest results and analyses on the energy system in the North Sea region. It offers an opportunity for key stakeholders from the Nordic region, coming from various backgrounds including public authorities and industry, to discuss the relevance of the models’ insights and the policy actions they suggest.
