Roberto Schaeffer

During the Eighteenth IAMC Annual Meeting held online last 11-13 November 2025, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium was proud to honour Roberto Schaeffer (PPE/COPPE/UFRJ, Brazil) with the IAMC Lifetime Achievement Award.
Roberto Schaeffer has received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to climate science, integrated assessment, and capacity building over more than twenty-five years. Roberto Schaeffer has played a pivotal role in advancing scientific understanding, developing national and international expertise, and elevating the voice of emerging economies in global climate debates.
Schaeffer’s notable contributions include:
In terms of leadership, he has served as an IPCC Lead Author and Coordinating Lead Author for twenty-five years, contributing to multiple assessment cycles and shaping global climate knowledge. As founder of Cenergia, he built the institution into a major Brazilian center for climate modelling, analysis, and training, strengthening scientific capacity in the region. He also coordinated Brazil’s climate assessment for the 2015 Paris Conference, directly supporting national climate strategy ahead of COP21, as well coordinated the modelling work behind the most recent NDC of Brazil made public in November 2024.
As a researcher, Roberto Schaeffer has published more than 200 scientific papers, including influential contributions in Nature and Science. His landmark study on deforestation, published in Nature Climate Change, has had significant impact on the understanding of land-use dynamics and climate policy in Brazil and beyond.
As an academic mentor, he has guided more than 160 students, many of whom have gone on to build and lead a vibrant research community across Brazil and internationally. His long-standing commitment to training, mentoring, and institution-building has helped shape the next generation of climate scientists.
Roberto Schaeffer is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and has received major national and international honors acknowledging his scientific leadership, policy relevance, and exceptional contributions to the field.
