Jay FUHRMAN
During the Sixteenth IAMC Annual Meeting held last 14 November – 16 November 2023, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium was proud to honour Jay FUHRMAN (PNNL/JGCRI) with the Early Career Researcher Award for his paper
Diverse carbon dioxide removal approaches could reduce impacts on the energy–water–land system, Jay Fuhrman, Candelaria Bergero, Maridee Weber, Seth Monteith,Frances M. Wang, Andres F. Clarens, Scott C. Doney, William Shobe & Haewon McJeon, Nature Climate Change, 2023.
In this paper, Dr. Fuhrman has incorporated new and emerging CO2 removal technologies into IAM modelling helping to expand the scope of balancing both the positive emissions as well as negative emissions space.
Throughout his PhD career, Jay conducted a series of CO2 removal research leading up to this paper. He brought together a group of experts in CO2 removal technologies, IAM modelers, process engineers, and climate scientists. Moving beyond the typical BECCS and Afforestation biased IAM scenarios, this paper considered the broad suite of CO2 removal technologies, both technological and nature-based. Jay synthesized the expert input into the IAM modeling data, and simulating them through the GCAM model to assess their collective impact on the integrated energy-water-land systems.
