
Scientific Working Group (SWG) on
Responsible AI for IAM Research (AI4IAM)
Scientific Working Group on Responsible AI for IAM Research (AI4IAM) is a collaborative platform for community learning, the exchange of best practices, and the development of formal guidance on AI integration in IAM research. Its core mission is to ensure that AI tools are adopted effectively and responsibly, supporting the IAMC in maintaining transparency, robustness, and alignment with open science principles and long-term climate policy requirements. The SWG also strengthens connections between the IAMC and the broader AI research ecosystem, ensuring that AI applications remain scientifically accountable and guided by rigorous human oversight.
Why this group, why now
AI is increasingly used across the IAM research workflow, from data and code preparation, through model emulation and validation, to scenario analysis and manuscript drafting. Recent work shows both the promise of these tools and the need for clear community standards on credibility, bias, and responsible use. AI4IAM provides the forum for that work.
Work programme
AI4IAM organizes its activities around four work packages:
- WP1 — Responsible AI Usage Drafting AI ethics guidelines for IAM research, collecting community feedback, establishing use protocols, and running a community-wide survey on current AI applications.
- WP2 — AI Partnerships Engagement with Climate Change AI and related communities, climate-focused workshops at major ML conferences, partnership frameworks, and industry pilot projects.
- WP3 — Community Outreach A dedicated AI4IAM presence in IAMC communications, AI-focused sessions at the IAMC annual meeting, research webinars, and interactive community workshops.
- WP4 — State-of-the-Art Review A rolling AI4IAM use case database, methodology benchmarking exercises, and best practice templates for using AI tools in IAM research.
An expression of interest call will be announced shortly to establish the specific working tasks. Participation from all IAMC members is highly encouraged.
