IAMC Advisory Council Meeting – Thursday, September 7th, 2023
The IAMC Advisory Council Meeting on September 7, 2023, was instrumental in shaping the future direction of the IAMC, with a focus on three primary areas:
State of the IAMC: IAMC’s global reach has grown, now boasting 73 member organizations from diverse regions, although Africa remains an underrepresented area. The Council called for assistance in identifying potential African members to foster broader geographical inclusivity.
Discussion Themes: The meeting yielded crucial insights. Advisors stressed the importance of charting a strategic plan for IAMC’s next five years. Moreover, they emphasized the necessity of reaching out to different communities, including macroeconomics, finance, and climate impacts modeling.
Capacity Building: Building on these discussions, attendees highlighted the significance of investing in capacity building, especially in regions with limited integrated assessment modeling capabilities. The IAMC was encouraged to undertake capacity-building initiatives, which would aid more countries in developing and implementing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term strategies (LTS’s). There was also a strong recommendation to enhance the communication of IAMC’s findings to various communities, such as the public finance sector and impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability researchers.
2023 IAMC Annual Meeting: Discussions revolved around the potential for capacity building during the annual meeting, the need for comprehensive country reports to assist decision-makers, and further outreach efforts to diverse communities, including the finance sector and African researchers.
In summary, the IAMC Advisory Council Meeting served as a pivotal forum to strategize IAMC’s trajectory, amplify its outreach efforts, and reinforce its commitment to maintaining high research standards.
