SUMMARY:ICONICS Webinar: Scenario Evolution Process of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways
DESCRIPTION:The International Committee On New Integrated Climate change assessment Scenarios (ICONICS) is pleased to announce Launching the Scenario Evolution Process Webinar on 12 February 2026. \nShared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) have provided a widely adopted foundation for climate-centric research\, yet their design limits applicability in the context of today’s interconnected global challenges. To address these limitations\, the International Committee on New Climate Change Assessment Scenarios (ICONICS) has started the Scenario Evolution Process (SEP): a community-led initiative to critically reassess\, adapt\, and potentially transform the SSPs to a more fit-for-purpose framework that supports research on resilient\, equitable\, and sustainable development and develop socioeconomic scenarios that have a applicability beyond the climate change domain. \nSpeakers will provide detail on the motivation\, vision and process for the Scenario Evolution Process\, with information on the concordant activities: \n1. A multi-stage survey to both scenario producers\, as well as users of scenario-based information. This engagement aims to broaden perspectives\, incorporate feedback from a broad audience\, and reduce Global North bias \n2. An academic literature exchange\, incorporating recommendations towards an updated scenario framework. \n3. A series of workshops to engage with a diverse range of communities. \nTo register for the webinar and hear more about options of staying engaged in the evolution process going forward use this link:\nhttps://iiasa.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_NKIEsrYmQjuUW1HIneqbrA \nIf you cannot attend this webinar\, it will be recorded and posted on the ICONICS website. Additional Q&A sessions will be held on 2 and 5 March. To register for the Q&A sessions\, please use the following links: \n2 March – 09:00 CET/Vienna – Zoom: Registration link\n5 March – 18:00 CET/Vienna – Zoom: Registration link

SUMMARY:IAMC Webinar: New insights on adaptation pathways and scenarios
DESCRIPTION:The scope of modelling of climate change impacts and strategies to reduce them through adaptation\, including in Integrated Assessment Models\, is limited due to gaps in understanding of what level of adaptation could take place and where\, which actors need to adapt and over what timeframe\, current and future constraints and limits to adaptation\, and so forth. In February 2025\, the workshop “Adaptation pathways and scenarios for climate change research” gathered interdisciplinary and diverse experts to collaboratively design tools to help close these knowledge gaps. \nThe workshop set out to develop outlines of adaptation pathways embedded in the into the SSP/RCP framework. This is meant to facilitate comparing (quantitative) adaptation research across different modeling groups and the synthesis of information for the 7th assessment cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). \nIn this Webinar\, Marina Andrijevic will present the outcomes of the workshop in the context of the paper “Towards scenarios of adaptive capacity for climate impact research”\, for which she won the IAMC Early Career Researcher Award 2024. \nDate: Tuesday\, March 18\, 2025\nTime: 15:00 CET/Vienna time\nVenue: online webinar \nPresenter:\nMarina Andrijevic\nResearch Scholar\, IIASA\, Austria \nRecording

SUMMARY:IAMC Webinar: SWG on National Scenarios - Progress and Open Call
DESCRIPTION:The architecture of the Paris Agreement combines bottom-up\, country driven processes based on individual Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) with top-down global stocktake (GST). Every five years\, starting in 2028\, each GST will evaluate the implementation of the Paris Agreement to assess collective progress towards achieving its purpose and long-term goals in terms of mitigation and adaptation. The stocktake will also inform each of the nations to update and enhance their individual NDCs. The GST will be informed by best available science (though IPCC and other sources). The current pledges are on track for a temperature rise of 2.4-2.6°C by the end of this century. The updated NDCs\, with Long Term Strategies (LTS) and Net Zero targets\, only reduce less than one percent of projected 2030 global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)\, although 45 percent is required to limit the rise in temperature to 1.5°C.\nIn the first study\, we would like to build on the work compiled in IPCC WGIII AR6 Chapter 4 (mitigation and development pathways in the near and medium term). This webinar will provide details on the progress made by the SWG and details about the open call. \nPresenter: Saritha Sudharmma Vishwanathan\, Assistant Professor\, Kyoto University (KU) and Visiting Researcher\, Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad (IIMA) \nThe webinar was held on January 30th\, 2024. \nRecordings \nPresentation slides

SUMMARY:IAMC Webinar: Standardization of scenario data collection via the IAMC data template: past developments and future challenges - Volker Krey
DESCRIPTION:The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) organised the webinar “Standardization of scenario data collection via the IAMC data template: past developments and future challenges“\, presented by Volker Krey\, the recipient of the 2022 edition of the IAMC Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the field of IAM on Tuesday 20 June\, 2023. \nAbstract:In the late 2000’s\, after the completion of the 4th IPCC assessment cycle\, the development of the “new scenario framework” as part of which the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) emerged\, and the establishment of Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) model intercomparison projects (MIPs) with Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) increased in frequency. At that time\, it was quite common that each MIP had its own template to collect data from the participating modeling teams. Data compilation in modeling teams was mostly done manually which limited the amount of data that could be collected and also was a source of errors.\nAt the start of the 5th IPCC assessment cycle\, within the IAMC an initiative was started to harmonize data collection efforts across MIPs by developing a harmonized but flexible data template. The Asian Modeling Exercise and the Energy Modeling Forum 24 project were the first MIPs as part of which the IAMC data template was used\, tested and improved. Since then\, the template was extended in many directions and has been used in dozens of MIPs and scenario collection efforts of multiple IPCC reports. In addition\, numerous tools have been developed that allow more efficient use of the data template.\nDuring this webinar\, the Speaker will provide an overview of the development of the IAMC data template and discuss challenges that emerged over time as well as ideas how to proceed with the development and maintenance. The discussion time will be devoted to collecting input on how to move forward with the development of the template and related tools.\n \n\n\nSpeaker: Volker Krey\, Research Group Leader Integrated Assessment & Climate Change Group (IACC)\, Energy\, Climate & Environment Program (ECE)\, IIASA\, Austria\nAdjunct Professor in Energy Systems Modeling\, Industrial Ecology Programme and Energy Transitions Initiative\, NTNU\, Norway \nModerator: Joana Portugal Pereira\, Professor at the Energy Planning Program of The Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering\, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ)\, Brazil \n\nRecordings \nPresentation slides

SUMMARY:IAMC Webinar: The Role of Integrated Assessment Models in Realizing a Net-Zero Society\, From the Experience of AIM Model Development - Mikiko Kainuma
DESCRIPTION:The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) invites you to the webinar “The Role of Integrated Assessment Models in Realizing a Net-Zero Society\, From the Experience of AIM Model Development“\, presented by Mikiko Kainuma\, the recipient of the 2022 edition of the IAMC Lifetime Achievement Award. The webinar will be held on Tuesday 23 May\, 11:00 CEST. \nAbstract: Prof. Morita\, Prof. Matsuoka and I started to develop the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) in 1990. At that time\, GHG emissions in Asia were not so high\, but we estimated that GHG emissions would increase along with economic growth in Asia. We thought that it was important to develop an integrated assessment model and explore the pathways to reduce GHG emissions in Asia. Importantly\, Asian researchers should develop their own models to tackle climate change\, reflecting specific climate and developmental challenges of their nations\, and use them to assist the policy-making processes in their countries. We have supported these policy-relevant research activities for 30 years. \n\n\nThe challenge now is to realize a net-zero society. A net-zero society must not only emit no greenhouse gases\, but also be a sustainable society. The role of integrated assessment models in realizing a Net-Zero Society and their challenges are introduced along with the history of AIM model development. \nSpeaker: Mikiko Kainuma\, Senior Research Advisor·Institute for Global Environmental Strategies \nModerator: Shinichiro Fujimori\, Associate Professor·Kyoto University\, Deparment of Enviromental Engineering and National Institute for Environmental Studies \n\nRecordings \nPresentation slides

SUMMARY:IAMC Webinar: 15 years of community and science-agenda building: from emissions scenarios to the transformative change - Nebojsa Nakicenovic
DESCRIPTION:The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) organised a webinar on “15 years of community and science-agenda building: from emissions scenarios to the transformative change“\, presented by Nebojsa Nakicenovic\, the recipient of the 2021 edition of the IAMC Lifetime Achievement Award. \n  \n15 years of community and science-agenda building: from emissions scenarios to the transformative change\nTuesday 8 November\, 15:00 CET \nAbstract: Integrated assessment community played a crucial role in developing emissions scenarios that were the basis for IPCC assessments from the beginning. For me\, the idea of IAMC was born in 2007 at a meeting in Aspen Colorado that was followed swiftly by the creation of the Consortium. A unique contribution by the IAMC is the response strategies to the dangerous climate change including the latest analyses of how to go down to net-zero emissions by midcentury.\nToday\, humanity is facing formidable challenges from war and food insecurity to the pandemic and ever-increasing pressure on the Earth systems including climate change. IAMC community has the possibility and capability to develop transformative pathways that can overcome the challenges and lead to a just future for all on a safe planet. We argue that this can only be achieved through a systemic and holistic approach and is not possible through incremental\, detached\, and partial solutions. This will require nothing short of a new integrated\, systemic\, and holistic science to achieve the needed grand transformation – a new transformative integrative assessment (and modeling). \nSpeaker:  Nebojsa Nakicenovic\, Group of Chief Scientific Advisors\, European Commission | Former Deputy Director General\, IIASA | Former Professor of Energy Economics\, TU Wien \nModerator: Elmar Kriegler\, Head of the Research Department “Transformation Pathways”\, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) \nWatch the recordings \nWebinar slides \n
